Construction on The Zeller Residence, a new ground up 3,300 square foot residence in Napa started construction in late November. Located at the edge of Downtown, the two story residence will be the home of Robert Zeller, a lifelong Napan who was born and raised on the same lot in the neighboring house. Once used as a Victory Garden during World War II, the lot has stood empty for nearly 60 years. An existing garage at the back of the lot, known as ‘The Dog House’, was Robert’s father’s office for many years, will remain as the primary garage. In late November, permits were finally secured and work began on the lot.
On the heels of the highly successful opening of their first smoothie bar on Valencia Street a few months ago, Project Juice recently unveiled their newest shop in The Market on Market, a new food hall located on the ground floor of the Twitter building.
In our last post Your Restaurant-the Importance of Design we focused on the value of hiring a qualified architect for your new restaurant. This time, we will delve into the space itself, and what you should look for when evaluating potential sites. Your space can make or break you, and I encourage you to use the resources and experience of your architect to help you find the perfect one for your business.
The San Francisco Giants aren’t the only game in town, as our rag-tag co-ed softball squad known as the Flying Pigs rumbled their way through an unprecedented perfect regular season!
The National League west look like a T-ball league compared to the grueling schedule of teams in the Architects, Engineers, and Contractors league, now in its 37th year.
According to current League Commissioner and co-ed softball historian, Luke Sheridan, there’s never been a team in the history of the league that has run the table all the way to the Championship.
Getting there was no easy task. The Flying Piggies came up with several come from behind victories this season…none more pressure filled than the semifinal game vs the 2013 defending champion Ringers squad. Down 4 runs with only 4 outs to go, the Piggies ripped off six consecutive base hits in a two out rally to tie the game, with an eventual walk off triple in their last at bat. “I thought we were toast,” said veteran Paul ‘P to the K’ Kirkland.” I was already thinking about next season,” said veteran power hitter Adam ‘The Hammer’ Bittle. But somehow, some way, the pink-clad squad pulled a rabbit out of their hat and scraped out the victory, propelling them to the Championship.
Brimming with adrenaline and confidence with their comeback win, the pink clad squad hit a DPR squad early and often with blistering line drive base hits and a deafening defense
To top it off, the Flying Pigs flexed their north bay muscle by sweeping though the South Bay Architects’ League in a grueling, all day, round robin tourney in Palo Alto. The squad plowed through their 5 games, starting at 9am and ending at 6pm. The marathon day concluded with an epic championship game, where the Piggies had to come from 6 runs behind in the last two innings to force extra innings, eventually winning the trophy!
Start your blenders! Project Juice nearing completion on Valencia Street.

When we meet with potential restaurant clients, particularly those just starting out, there are a lot of initial questions as to the need for an architect. The conversation generally goes a bit like this:
I have always dreamed of owning my own restaurant and I know that’s something you specialize in. Is there any advice you can give me?
Cadet Wine and Beer Bar, a new and welcome addition to the continued revitalization of Downtown Napa, dove into construction at the beginning of May and is speeding towards an early summer opening.
Compelled by our participation in the South Park Architects’ Open House (a walking tour of some residential designers’ offices in our neighborhood), we were up and running in our new space at the start of October. The Open House was held in conjunction with The Residential Architect ReInvention Symposium & San Francisco House Tour, and allowed us to meet and chat with many other residential architects from around the country who were visiting the symposium. It was a great evening, where we were able to share a multitude of different ideas about residential design and architecture…not to mention being a great excuse to share some drinks and food, something we never seem to shy away from! And thanks to our neighbors at JAX Vineyards, who helped out with the wine, the festivities went well into the evening. Luckily we had a roof deck to handle the crowds and take advantage pf a perfect SF “summer” night.
