BUN MEE SFO
For the third installment of the popular Vietnamese sandwich eatery, zero ten design again teamed up with owner Denise Tran to successfully win a bid for a coveted space in Terminal 3 at SFO. The design aims to combine the charm of the original Fillmore Street shop with the modern vibe and intensity of Market Street, again featuring a wall-to-wall mural designed to engage and catch the eye of the flurry of airport passengers hustling by the space.
Natural white oak detailing, a corrugated metal counter face, and stone countertop all help to create a modern urban street vibe, while the glass tile mural backdrop serves to grab the eye of the throngs of people scurrying through the terminal. The feature wall mural, created by local artist Phillip Hua, is made up of over four hundred individual eight inch square glass tiles. Each tile is printed with an indiscernible image on the back face that, when viewed from afar, creates a clear and colorful photographic image of Mama Tran, the mother of owner Denise Tran, who provided the inspiration for the Bun Mee sandwich shops.
The combination of materials and unique visual elements experienced both near and afar, help to create a layered design approach that contributes to San Francisco International Airport’s goal of creating an experience equivalent to strolling through a vibrant San Francisco neighborhood.
