upper terrace remodel

project details

This residential remodel reimagined a narrow four-story home, built in 1971, perched on one of San Francisco’s iconic hills. The site posed challenges: steep slope, shared property-line walls, limited views, and an underused rear yard.

The design opened the house to the landscape. We replaced the rear wall with a 40-foot-tall steel moment frame, allowing for a 25-foot-wide glass wall that connects the interior to panoramic views of the Bay and Golden Gate Bridge. The roof was raised and rebuilt to bring in new vistas from the fourth-floor loft.

The rear yard was regraded with terraced retaining walls to create two levels. The upper level has a spa deck with a sauna and hot tub. The lower level is a play area for the family.

This remodel turned a dated structure into a modern home shaped by its site, with sweeping views and layered outdoor space.
