Workshop Cafe is a cafe-meets-workshare space located in downtown San Francisco.  Workshop approached zero ten design when considering a new build out within the ground floor in a historic building in San Francisco’s Financial District. The space was located at the base of an office tower and was accessed at both a street side and an interior atrium side. Workshop Cafe’s existing location showcased a gritty, handcrafted design with murals by Erik Otto, and this new location intentionally builds upon that aesthetic direction so as to maintain the cohesiveness of the Workshop brand.

Spatially, the design was broken up into a few key components. A separate, public cafe is accessed via the street frontage and overlooks the work space, which is accessed via a controlled through-point. This work space has multiple seating typologies to maximize the user experience and provide flexibility throughout the day. There are private conference rooms, communal tables, quiet work zones and bleacher seating that can act as a ‘theater’ to allow for a speaker series and nighttime events. Controlling the entire work space area is a tower element that acts as a beacon from the cafe and contains a lounge space
Vinyl graphics on the storefronts privatize the work spaces while visually activating the atrium side with inspirational artwork that showcase the creativity taking place inside the space.
